The name White Duck Taco Shop originates from a nickname the Chef earned when she frequently got excited and talked too much to the kitchen staff. They called her 'La Pata Blanca' which means White Duck.
Laura Reuss should be excited. Along with Ben Mixon, they have created an awesome taco eatery that's taking over the East coast. I'd be quacking a lot, too, if I were around all these tacos 24/7.
Established in 2011 at Hatchery Studios, located in Ashville, North Carolina, Reuss and Mixon capitalized on their unique taco offerings and great service to expand. That expansion has created quite a few more quacking ducks.
There are two locations in Greenville, South Carolina. The first is at 1320 Hampton Ave Suite 12B and the other is at 301 Airport Rd. We visited the latter.
The space is quite large. We got there around 11:30 a.m., when they opened, and good thing we did. It started to fill up fast. Too chilly to enjoy the outside, however.
The Chicken Tikka Masala taco was a great find! It had chicken, fried chick peas, yogurt and lettuce (my wife held the lettuce). Talk about being unique. The flavors were marvelous.
The next taco we loved was the Korean Beef Bulgogi. It had kimchi and an avocado puree. Brought back memories of some great bulgogi we loved at Yagi Sushi and Hibachi in Pawleys Island, South Carolina.
And we saved the best for last. The Crispy Pork Belly. OK, what makes this unique? Glad you asked. It's the pickled watermelon. Yes, I said watermelon. With the rind and green onion sauce, this sweet addition seals the flavor deal right here. Trust me. Do not hold the watermelon. It's a rule. The first one you get you must get the watermelon.
I couldn't get enough, so we ordered more. They were phenomenal. Like, AJ Styles phenomenal.
Oh, and we had to wash it down with something... Introducing the Midnight Margarita!
Never too early for a great drink.
If you've never been to White Duck Taco Shop, then go. You'll be glad you did. Be a culinary encourager and go to your nom-nom place.
Here's a couple more we enjoyed.
