We were invited out to Chef 21 Sushi Burger to try a new menu item and some of their favorites recently. Let's just say we were very thankful to have been there for this great food.
Assistant Manager Dylan Cole Sherman was eager to get us seated so the culinary excitement could begin. And Levy Xiao - along with her whole chef staff - far surpassed any expectations we had.
The Tuna Lover Roll is a crowd pleaser, for sure. It is shrimp tempura, cream cheese, avocado, topped with fresh tuna, Jalapeno, special sauce. A definite win for the taste buds.
The Spider Roll is for fans of softshell crab. It has fried soft shell crab, spicy crab meat, cucumber, avocado, tobiko in spicy mayo, eel sauce. It was fresh, flavorful and zesty!
Ever tried fried tuna? It was a first for us, too! But, the Volcano Roll erupted with flavors and all the ingredients paired very well. It has deep fried tuna, salmon, white fish, avocado, topped with seared spicy tuna, masago, scallion. All fresh, with great flavor combinations.
While the sushi was superbly crafted and wowed with tastes, we were excited to try what the restaurant was really known for... their sushi burgers.
Instead of a beef patty in between two buns and some sushi on top, the folks here have really thought outside the box. Their sushi burgers incorporate crispy rice patties. While they use buns for their classic burger, we wanted the full, unique experience.
The Jalapeno Tuna Burger, also known as the Spicy Tuna Burger, was definitely a legit hit. The tuna was cooked perfectly with the ponzu pickled jalapenos providing the right amount of heat. The spicy mayo sends it out of obit. It was really well put together.
It was paired with Grilled Portabella Mushrooms as a choice side. Those were phenomenal.
We also tried the Bulgogi Sushi Burger, which will be on their menu for this year's Restaurant Week South Carolina event from January 13-23.
It's crafted with homemade bulgagi and kimchi on fried rice patty. They say it's their best creation yet, and really, all the creations here at Chef 21 Sushi Burger are marvelous.
But, what we were told to come out for was something some people would think of as simplistic. But, let me just say that the flavor combination really made this something a repeater-eater dish, meaning you'll hit the repeat button and eat it over and over again.
It's called the Sushi Dog. It's a beef frank inside sushi rice and nori, tempura-fried, panko-coated, and drizzled with their house-made spicy mayo and ketchup.
The spicy mayo really sets it off. Speaking of the spicy mayo, it is very similar to what we enjoyed at a Pawleys Island restaurant and my wife was very happy she found something that resembled the flavor profile. They sell the sauce, too. Just ask them about it.
Chef 21 Sushi Burger is a legit #gotoyournomnomplace in Greenville County. They are located at 699 Fairview Rd Suite C (where Food Lion is) in Simpsonville, S.C. Their menu is online, you can order online and have it delivered through DoorDash.
Go say hi to Levy and Dylan and the whole staff, be a #culinaryencourager and enjoy some great, outstanding food. We sure did.
