SOUTHERN ROOTS: A BBQ REUNION FESTIVAL COMING NEXT MONTH TO TRAILBLAZER PARK

TRAVELERS REST, SC 3.30.22 – In exactly one month, the inaugural Southern Roots: A BBQ Reunion event is bringing together an incredible line-up of pitmasters, chefs, restaurants and farmers from all over the country, right here to Travelers Rest, for an amazing cause. The festival’s founders – Geoff Rhyne of IDefine and Red Clay Hot Sauce, Brenda Luginbill of cb events, Jason Callaway of Bacon Bros. Public House and local entrepreneur, Patrick McInerney – created this event in an effort to benefit the non-profit organization Geoff Rhyne started, IDefine, in support of his daughter.

In February 2019, Rhyne learned from the Greenwood Genetic Center that his 15-month-old daughter, Ella Marie, had a rare genetic disorder called Kleefstra Syndrome. Like most rare diseases, Kleefstra Syndrome has no FDA approved treatment. There is no cure. However, Rhyne was determined to drive research and drug development to help not only his daughter, but as many other patients as possible. In September of 2020, Geoff and his partners launched IDefine, and quickly raised over $100,000 to fund the first ever medical center in the U.S. focused on Kleefstra Syndrome, the Kleefstra Clinic at Boston Children’s Hospital. However, time is of the essence. To acquire the funding necessary to accelerate research, Rhyne decided to leverage his background in the food and beverage community to create a unique, must-attend event. After connecting with Callaway, Luginbill and McInerney, the team started formulating the idea of a Greenville-based BBQ and music event that would bring the community together in a reunion style format. And thus, Southern Roots was born!

A ticket to Southern Roots gives you all-you-can-eat access to over 30 pitmasters and chefs, beverages, various local artisans and music from some incredible musicians all day long. We’ll be joined by the likes of renowned pitmasters and chefs from all over the country, including Rob Levitt of Publican Quality Meats, Leonard Botello IV of TRUTH BBQ, Matthew Raiford of Gilliard Farms and Adrian Davila of Davila’s BBQ. We will also have some of Greenville’s favorite chefs and restaurants including Adam Cooke of Topsoil Restaurant, Gregory McPhee of The Anchorage, Anthony Gray of Stella’s Brasserie and David Porras of Oak Hill Cafe. Our participants also include South Carolina Chef Ambassadors Haydn Shaak of Restaurant 17 and Chris Williams of Roy’s Grille. Additionally, Southern Roots is

partnering with several South Carolina farms to produce ingredients specifically for the event, such as Feed and Seed Co., Greenbrier Farms, Providence Farm, Stage 22 Farms and Wet Knot Farms, giving our chefs the freshest ingredients to work with, and our attendees the truest Southern roots they could taste!

Country singer, Gyth Rigdon, of The Voice’s season 16 will be joining us on stage, as well as some of the best Upstate artists; Wilder Things Than Us, Darby Wilcox and Trey Francis.
